Spiders are the culprits behind the five flight delays that took place at Kansas City International Airport over the weekend.

As many as five flights were delayed about 15 minutes Saturday after air traffic controllers were bombarded with a spider infestation.

Three employees were reportedly bitten by the arthropods at the Air Traffic Control Center in Olathe, Kan., which controls the air space around Kansas City.

After the infestation, controllers had to evacuate and move to another area of the building to resume with their duties.

Exterminators who were sent to clear up the affected room discovered a spider's nest egg that had hatched.

"You're talking in some spider cases up to 400 and in large breeds, you're talking 1000s from one mom,” said CJ Workman who works with Schendel Pest Control.

The FAA did not reveal the type of spiders that attacked the employees but said that travelers were never in danger.
