Arizona Sen. John McCain is backing legislation that would swap George Washingtons for dollar coins.
He joins Sens. Tom Harkin, Tom Coburn, Mike Enzi and Mark Udall in supporting the measure, called the COINS Act. Advocates of the act say that switching to dollar coins could save the U.S. government billions of dollars.
In 2011, an investigation showed a Washington, D.C., gentleman's club opposed a similar measure.
“I think it would be very awkward for everyone involved. How much more would a coin weigh than a dollar bill? It would be very hard,” said Daniel Harris, owner of Archibald's Gentleman's Club. “You can’t put a coin in a garter belt.”
McCain replied, “then I hope that they could obtain larger denominations.”
