A stretch of beaches in Florida may be known officially as the Treasure Coast, but finding actual treasure these days is "by no means a regular occurrence," according to diver Greg Bounds.

But a crew of divers with shipwreck salvage rights, including Bounds, took the boat Capitana out Saturday off the Vero Beach coast and found 48 gold coins under the sand.

Experts believe the gold coins were lost in the water about 300 years ago, likely from a fleet of Spanish ships that sank during a July 1715 hurricane.

Each coin is worth about $4,000, bringing the grand total for the crew's haul to $200,000.

"There's many more days we pick up beer cans, fishing weights, just garbage," Bounds said.
