Bear mauls man who fed it barbecue meat

A man was mauled by a black bear in Alaska after he threw the animal a piece of barbecued meat while going on a bike ride near Eklutna Lake Campground.

According to officials, the man -- who will remain unnamed as he could face charges of illegally feeding wildlife -- had been drinking before he decided to go for a bike ride during a church picnic.

The bear reportedly ate the meat and didn't attack the man until he threw a second piece. Alaska officials said the bear had gone "ballistic."

Later that day, park rangers found the man all bloodied washing himself at the campground.

"He wasn't terribly coherent," said Alaska Department of Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh. "He was unsure of where the attack actually happened."

Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipse said the man was treated at the hospital for puncture wounds and scratches to his jaw and back.

Asked if the bear was likely to repeat the attack, Marsh was quick to say no.

"The bear was pretty much goaded into this," he said.
