May 17 (UPI) -- A Maryland man with two birth dates due to a paperwork error used both sets of numbers to play the lottery and won $1.9 million.

The 79-year-old Gaithersburg man said a paperwork error when he was born in Louisiana mistakenly listed his birthday as April 23, and it was only recently that official records were corrected to list his correct birthday, April 21.

The man told Maryland Lottery officials he considers both dates lucky, so he used both to buy a Multi-Match ticket and scored a $1.9 million jackpot in the May 7 drawing.

"I was scanning the newspaper and flipped to the lottery section first, and when I saw the numbers my eyes just grew bigger and bigger," the man said.

The winner said he quickly called his wife.

"When I told her how much we had won, at first she didn't believe me!" he said.

The couple said they plan to enlist the help of a financial adviser and might use some of the windfall to pay off their bills and donate to their church.
