Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The Rotary Club in Key West, Fla., is pleading for the return of its iconic "Welcome to Key West" sign after it was apparently stolen following Hurricane Irma.

The Rotary Club said the sign, which declares Key West to be "Paradise U.S.A.," was knocked down when Hurricane Irma swept through the area Sept. 10, and it members discovered it was missing when they went to repair the sign.

"We're hopeful someone picked it up for safekeeping," club member Nadene Grossman Orr told the Florida Keys Keynoter.

The Rotary Club said in a Facebook post that the sign cost about $8,000.

"We would like to have it back," Grossman Orr said. "It is definitely missing."

The sign has been temporarily replaced with a hand-painted sign reading, "Welcome to Paradise."
