Sept. 6 (UPI) -- An apparent escaped horse ran onto a stretch of Colorado highway, causing traffic chaos before being wrangled by firefighters.

South Metro Fire Rescue said firefighters were summoned Monday morning to a stretch of E470 in Douglas County, near Parker, where a frightened mare was running loose in traffic.

"It was pretty chaotic," South Metro Public Information Officer Eric Hurst told KUSA-TV. "There were cars all over the place, there were people in and out of traffic, and it was very, very unsafe."

The horse was captured safely and taken to the Equine Harmony Center in Franktown while authorities attempt to identify the animal's owners.

"It's a very unique situation," Hurst said.
