Great white shark steals catch, leaps out of water

Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts charter boat captain shared video of a catch-stealing shark leaping high into the air to take a fish from the end of an angler's line.

Hap Farrell, captain of the 35-foot Stunmai II, a boat aligned with Orleans-based Rock Harbor Charter Fleet, posted a video to Facebook that initially shows a clip from his first outing Saturday, when an angler reeled in the head of a formerly-enormous bass that was stolen from his line by a great white shark.

The video then shows footage from the day's second outing, when a new group of customers managed to hook a fish.

A great white shark then suddenly breaches, flying high into the air with the angler's catch and fishing line in its mouth.

"This is something to watch," Farrell wrote.

He said great whites are known for their feats of spectacular breaching.

"It's not unusual for sharks to do that, especially great whites," Farrell told the Boston Herald. "I videotape just about every trip I take. I used a camera made by Canon that is almost broadcast quality. That's why I had the camera out."

He estimated the jumping shark was about 9 feet long.
