July 6 (UPI) -- A group of feline fanatics wearing cat costumes gathered at an award show in Malaysia to set a world record.

Hundreds of people came together at the ASEAN Film Festival and Awards 2017 in Kuching to set the Guinness World Record for "Largest gathering of people dressed as cats."

A total of 440 people donned cat costumes for the record attempt, nearly doubling the previous record of 250 people.

The record required that all participants wear a full-body costume, including whiskers, ears and a tail to be counted toward the grand total.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Hoda Khachab noted that most of the participants in Kuching's record-setting performance were school children that were "extremely excited to be involved in a Guinness World Records attempt."

The city of Kuching's name translates to "cats" in the local language and the city is filled with statues and museums dedicated to felines.
