June 29 (UPI) -- An interstate in Texas was shut down early Thursday morning as police attempted to corral dozens of pigs that spilled out of a truck.

The semi truck carrying nearly 200 pigs crashed into the center median of I-45 in Wilmer at about 6:30 a.m. and sent pigs scattering onto the road.

"We had a total of 195 [on the semi]. We do not know how many dead-loss or how many ran off," Wilmer Police Department Lt. Eric Pon said.

Police struggled to capture the pigs, which sprinted miles in both directions on the roadway, as both the northbound and southbound lanes were closed.

"The biggest challenge was corralling the pigs, keeping them from oncoming traffic and getting run over," Pon said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured and police sprayed water on the pigs to keep them cool in the Texas heat as they guided them back to the truck.
