June 29 (UPI) -- A South Carolina police officer rescued an injured kitten that became stranded in traffic on a busy bridge.

Mount Pleasant Traffic Officer Matthew Cowdrey said he and two other officers responded Wednesday morning when several callers reported a kitten stranded on the southbound side of the Ravenel Bridge.

"I saw the kitten hunched over on the left side of the far left lane so I got out and the other two officers helped block the lanes while we picked the kitten up," Cowdrey told WCIV-TV. "It was very scared and when we went to pick it up, it tried to run so thankfully we were able to pick it up before it ran into traffic."

Cowdrey tweeted a photo of the feline after the rescue.

The kitten was taken to a veterinarian, where it was treated for minor injuries to its back legs and laws. Cowdrey said the kitten will eventually be up for adoption at the Charleston Animal Society.
