June 28 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey helped rescue a large bear cub that found itself trapped in netting near a batting cage.

Ringwood Police shared video of an officer carefully approaching the distressed cub before cutting it free from the netting on Tuesday morning.

"This morning Detective Longo saved this large bear cub, which was entangled in batting cage netting," police said.

Video shows Longo attempting to create an incision in the back of the net, as the young bear struggles to break free from the enclosure.

After opening up a large enough hole, the detective began pulling on the netting from the opposite side until the cub popped out and ran off toward freedom.

Ringwood Police warned that recreational netting can be harmful to wild animals if left outside unattended.

"Animals, most commonly deer, become entangled in soccer nets and other types of recreational netting and sometimes die," police said. "We urge residents in high animal traffic areas to take down nets when not in use."
