June 28 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in Maine said they are trying to solve the mystery of a 6-foot boa constrictor captured on an astonished resident's porch.

The Southern Maine Animal Control Group posted photos to Facebook showing the big red tail boa officials captured after it was discovered on a Biddleford resident's porch.

"Anyone loose their 6ish foot red tail boa?" the Facebook post asked. "If so it is relaxing with the good people at the Animal Welfare Society."

Commenters questioned whether the serpent could be "Wessie," a semi-mythical snake that has been the subject of local lore ever since last summer, when a Westbrook Police Department officer spotted a big snake "eating a large mammal, possibly a beaver (not joking)."

Authorities later discovered a skin that had been shed by a huge snake along the Presumpscot River, near Riverbank Park. The skin was found to have come from an anaconda, however, and not a red tail boa constrictor.
