June 22 (UPI) -- A Green Bay Packers super fan officially became "Mr. Packer" after asking to take on his wife's last name.

Ryan Holtan-Murphy, 41, married Marie Packer, 38, at the Willis Tower in Chicago on June 17, proudly adopting a new surname to display his loyalty to his beloved Packers.

"We're the Packer family now," he told ABC News.

The pair met three years ago at a karaoke bar in Madison, Wisconsin and although Holtan-Murphy was quickly impressed by Packer's accomplishments and beauty, he was left in disbelief after learning her last name.

"I remember thinking, she was beautiful, she's hilarious, she's tough, she's a doctor, she's smart," he told WTMJ. "But when she said her name, I thought, oh, she's messing with me. I made her show me two forms of ID to prove her last name was Packer."

Packer said the two had an understanding that Holtan-Murphy would take on the "Packer" name and after spending most of her life living in the home states of some of the Packers' biggest rivals she didn't expect to find someone who would so greatly appreciate her link to the Green Bay football team.

"I was like, wow, my last name could be amazing for somebody," she said. "But I was living in Lions country and then I moved to Chicago and it's Bears country. It wasn't super popular there. I just kind of thought it was never going to mean anything to anybody. Then I met him and it meant everything to him."

Packer's husband made sure his love for the team was on display at their wedding, which featured Packers-themed signs, and place settings.

The devoted fan even surprised his bride by wearing a green suit and tie plastered with the Packers logo.

"I ordered it three months ago and have been hiding it under the bed in our guest room. She was a lot harder to find on the dance floor once I showed up in the suit," he said. "She's a great sport. She's a lot of fun."

The couple, who own custom Packers jerseys which read "Mr. Packer" and "Dr. Packer," are honeymooning in Turks and Caicos as Holtan-Murphy awaits his official name change.

"I've already started the paperwork for after the wedding," he said. "I have my completed application for a new Social Security card, new passport and new driver's license ready to mail! My new full name will be Ryan Holtanmurphy Packer. I can't wait!"
