Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe May 23 (UPI) -- An Alabama college student who founded his own nonprofit said he is 17 states deep in his quest to mow 50 lawns in 50 states. Rodney Smith Jr. said he mowed a lawn Monday at single mom Danielle Auckerman's Marysville home, bringing him to 17 states in his quest to mow at least one lawn in each of the 50 states. Advertisement Smith founded the Raising Men Lawn Care Service, a nonprofit that mows lawns for elderly and disabled customers as well as single parents and military personnel. Smith, who is working on a master's degree in social work, said his 50-state project is aimed both at challenging himself and encouraging other young people to do good for their communities. "I have a challenge to kids worldwide," Smith told KING-TV. He said the "50-yard challenge" encourages volunteers to mow 50 lawns for people in their communities who aren't able to do it for themselves. "A lot of kids are just inside playing video games. They're able to get out and make a difference in their community with a lawnmower," Smith said. Smith, whose previous stops include Highland, Calif., and Portland, Ore., said the next state on his cross-country lawn mowing tour is Idaho.
