April 26 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania school district confirmed a high school student's photo of a dead worm in his school lunch was authentic, but cafeteria workers were not to blame.

East Lycoming School Superintendent Michael D. Pawlik said Tuesday the 3/4-inch corn earworm was found Monday in a popcorn chicken bowl entree being eaten by a student in the Hughesville High School cafeteria.

The student brought the discovery to the attention of cafeteria staff, who immediately stopped serving the dish and provided the student with a replacement lunch.

"I'm glad he came forward," Pawlik told PennLive.com.

The popcorn chicken bowl consists of mashed potatoes, corn, popcorn chicken and gravy.

"After investigating, it is our belief that the bug was actually a corn ear worm that came in the USDA federal subsidized corn commodity. We have since filed a complaint form with the USDA," Pawlik said in a statement provided to WNEP-TV.
