April 18 (UPI) -- A Virginia family who awoke to find the Easter eggs hidden in their yard had been taken reviewed security camera footage and identified the thief: a sweet-toothed fox.

Katie and Micah Joffee said they hid the candy-filled plastic eggs around the outside of their Vienna home Saturday night between 10:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. and the mother emerged first thing the next morning to immediately notice something was amiss.

"And I look out the front door and I didn't see anything," Katie Joffee told WJLA-TV. "I didn't see any eggs. We all come outside and there's about one or two in sight and my husband is mouthing to me somebody took the eggs. Somebody took the eggs. That's nuts."

The couple said they initially suspected teenagers were behind the Easter morning heist, but they reviewed footage from their security cameras and quickly spotted the culprit.

"We spotted the fox taking an egg off one of these little bushes here," Micah Joffee said. "We can only deduct that over time the fox took about 30 eggs."

The fox left only a few scattered, chewed-up eggs behind.

The theft at the Joffee family's home was certainly unusual for the area, but not unique to the world -- a remarkably similar event took place that same night on the other side of the world.

Shaun Williams posted security camera footage to YouTube showing a fox stealing the candy-filled plastic eggs he and his wife hid for their children outside their home Saturday night in West Dubbo -- in New South Wales, Australia.

Williams said the Aussie fox ate more than just candy, it consumed the eggs' contents "foil and all."
