March 28 (UPI) -- A bull caused a multi-vehicle collision after wandering onto a California road on Monday night.

California Highway Patrol received calls about a pair of collisions on eastbound state Highway 4 at 7:59 p.m., including one in which a vehicle fatally struck a bull that was crossing the highway.

The initial crash caused a chain reaction resulting in a second collision that ended in a five-car pileup.

Three people were transported to a hospital after sustaining minor injuries in the second collision and the cow from the first collision died at the scene.

Highway patrol were unsure where the bull came from, but local rancher Nick Compaglia speculated that poor weather in the area may have contributed to its escape.

"Maybe because of this terrible winter...erosion underneath the fence, the hill slid and the cow got out that way...It scares us all to death when they get out on the freeway," he said.
