Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Drivers in Vermont found themselves in a sticky situation after a maple syrup spill shut down a local highway.

Vermont State Police briefly shut down Interstate 91 after a barrel of maple syrup spilled onto the road Monday afternoon.

"Interstate 91 north at exit 27 in Newport has been closed due to a maple syrup spill," police said. "Fire dept is on-scene working on clean up."

No crash was involved in the incident, which saw the barrel containing the sweet and sticky treat fall off the back of a truck while driving on the highway.

A portion of the highway was quickly reopened for traffic, as drivers were encouraged to travel slowly as crews cleaned up the area.
