Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in India said a python acted like a "mother" to four puppies that fell down a well and spent four days with the snake.

Neha Patel, an animal activist, said rescuers removed the rock python and four puppies from the 80-foot-deep well in Vadodara, Gujarat, Tuesday.

Patel said the puppies spent an estimated four days with the snake at the bottom of the well after they apparently fell in while playing nearby. She said the puppies were found curled up with the 6-foot-long python, which appeared to be protecting the canines.

"They were there for four days. The python could have eaten the puppies but it didn't harm them, instead kept them safe and gave a mother's love," Patel told ANI.

Patel said the snake was released into a nearby forest and the puppies were reunited with their mother dog.
