CHICAGO, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Chicago man showed his respect for "all types of life" by rescuing a large rat he found drowning in a wading pool outside his home.

The video shows the man, a woman, and a dog investigating the outdoor wading pool where the rat, which the man identified as a large baby, was struggling to keep its head above water.

The man theorizes the rat, which squeals in distress, will drown when it gets too tired to swim.

"Even though I don't like rats, I respect all types of life," the man says.

The man uses a shovel to move the rat from the water to dry ground, where it flees.
