"Patrolman Douglas Shortway and Sergeant Christopher Burns were dispatched to the Boonton Reservoir for a report of a deer stuck on the ice. Upon their arrival they located deer stuck on the ice approximately 25 yards into the reservoir," police said.
Officers soon realized they required special ice rescue equipment which was eventually provided by the Bloomingdale Fire Department.
"We had the two firemen suited up to the water suits. There was rope tied on each one of them. They crawled out to the ice and they go to the deer. They attempted to put some type of saving device around it but were unable to," Kinnelon Police Sgt. Christopher Burns told WAFB.
Video shows the rescuers sprawled out on their stomachs as they carefully slid across the ice to drag the deer to safety.
