NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A New York man's attempt to take a selfie with a seemingly friendly deer ended with the man struggling to prevent himself from being gored.

Ryan Blanco of Staten Island said he was taking photos of deer in the woods Nov. 6 when he was approached by a friendly eight-point buck.

"As I was taking my pictures, there was a deer that actually did not shy away, and he decided to actually come up to me," Blanco told WCBS-TV. "He just came up to me and started nudging me, and he started sniffing me out, and I started petting him, and the whole thing lasted 20 minutes."

Planco said the deer posed for numerous selfies before the man decided to leave -- a decision that did not sit well with the buck.

"I guess he got attached and he was not letting me leave," Blanco said. "He kept coming up to me as I was walking away. He kept rubbing up on me."

"As I'm leaving, he takes off and blocks the path. I say to myself, which way do I go? Do I pass him? Do I go backwards? Instead, he starts walking towards me, puts his head down like he's going into battle stance and, I say to myself, 'OK, this is not going to end up good,'" Blanco said.

Blanco said the deer charged at him and he grabbed the animal's antlers.

"When he blocked my path, he put his head down and got into a battle position," Blanco told WABC-TV. "When he came up to me I grabbed onto his antlers because he had already charged against my legs. And all I did was push with all my might, hoping it wouldn't escalate at that point and I'm just glad that I'm here to tell the story."
