LEICESTER, N.C., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- A North Carolina woman who bought a scratch-off lottery ticket to teach her husband a lesson about losing said the plan backfired when she won $1 million.

Glenda Blackwell of Leicester told North Carolina Education Lottery officials her husband, Buddy, asked her to pick up some Powerball tickets Saturday when she popped into the Suttles Quik Mart in Asheville, so she decided to buy a $10 Carolina Millions scratch-off ticket to show him the folly of playing the lottery.

"I wanted to show him that luck doesn't always hit," Blackwell said.

"I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch off to show him they didn't hit," Blackwell told WLOS-TV. "Sometimes I get aggravated with him, so I tell him, 'You're just wasting your money.'"

Blackwell said she scratched off the ticket and immediately realized her plan wasn't going to work.

"I had to eat my words," Blackwell said. "But those are pretty good words to eat."

The winner chose the $600,000 lump sum option, which came out to $415,503 after taxes.

"We've struggled a lot, so now we can buy our own home and our own land. It'll be paid for and I don't have to worry about that no more," Blackwell said. "So, that's what I plan to do with some of the money and the other part I plan to help my daughter and to put money up for my two granddaughters for college."
