The officers discovered the animal, a raccoon, was tangled in ropes under the man's deck and had been shot through the base of its right ear with a hunting-style carbon-fiber arrow.
The department said officers were successful in untangling the raccoon from the ropes and removing the arrow from its ear.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.
"Kalamazoo Public Safety would like to remind everyone that 'no person shall hunt or trap wildlife at any time within the City limits' (ord 7-9). Humane trapping and releasing is allowed for some nuisance animals and animals causing damage to property," the department said.
