Fireball streaks across morning sky in southeastern United States

TUPELO, Miss., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A fireball so bright it was caught on a dashboard camera in early morning daylight was a meteor breaking up in the atmosphere, NASA said.

‎Dale Rakestraw of Tupelo, Miss., posted a video to Facebook showing the fireball his dashboard camera recorded streaking across the morning sky just prior to 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The object was clearly visible in the sky, despite the light from the impending sunrise.

NASA said the meteor was first spotted 65 miles over Sawyersville, Ala., and headed northwest at about 89,000 mph. Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office in Huntsville said the meteor finally broke up 41 miles over Louisville, Miss.
