FREMONT, N.H., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A drought in New Hampshire has forced a local snowmobile competition to truck in thousands of gallons of water.

Organizers for the "Race into Winter" snowmobile grass drags and watercross competition brought in more than 20,000 gallons of water to fill three man-made ponds for the annual event at the Brookvale Farm.

"They're normally full, and this year they have nothing in them," site organizer Roger Wright told the New Hampshire Union Leader of the ponds.

Wright told WMUR the pond where the watercross racing event remained at an acceptable level , but the three "cooling" ponds required more water for the event to proceed safely.

"They're small little canals that the snowmobiles use to travel through to cool their suspension," he said, "They are critical to doing the event -- there's no question about that -- and so without it, the snowmobiles can't run to perform their stunts and perform the actual races."

Despite the early difficulty, the Columbus Day weekend event is expected to draw about 40,000 guests and 400 competitors from the U.S. and Canada and will include new additions such as lawnmower racing this year.

"It's always new and different for spectators to come see, whether they're snowmobilers or not," Wright said.
