Lottery winner shocked to find $10,000 jackpot was actually $100,000

RED WING, Minn., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A Minnesota man who attempted to collect on a $10,000 lottery prize found his efforts foiled by a simple error -- he had actually won $100,000.

Steven Larson of Red Wing said he visited the Minnesota Lottery office in Owatonna Sept. 29 to collect the $10,000 he thought he had won from a Diamond Crossword scratch-off lottery ticket purchased a few months earlier from the local Main Street Freedom Valu Center.

Larson said he left the office empty-handed, but only because it turned out his ticket was worth $100,000, and prizes over $30,000 have to be claimed at the lottery's office in Roseville.

The winner said the extra trip was "well worth the drive."

Larson said the first thing he plans to buy with his winnings is "a big steak to grill."
