PITTSBURGH, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Authorities in Pittsburgh used a hydraulic jack on a metal fence to free a deer that somehow trapped itself between the bars.

Pittsburgh police said officers responded along with Animal Care and Control officers and a Public Works crew about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday when a doe was found trapped with her head and front legs on one side of the fence and her backside on the other.

An officer put a blanket over the deer's head to keep her calm and Public Works employees attempted to cut through the fence with cable cutters, but the bars proved too strong for that method.

Animal Care and Control Officer Jim Genco said police had a hydraulic "SWAT jack," a jaws-of-life-style device used for SWAT operations, and used it to separate the bars.

Genko told KDKA-TV the officers "pulled the deer through and then we kind of had to let go right away and everybody had to get out of the way so the deer could run away."

The deer was last seen fleeing into a wooded area without apparent serious injuries.

"It was definitely a team effort by multiple departments and we're very appreciative of the happy ending here," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said.
