NEW YORK, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A woman trying to sell insects on a New York City subway train threw them into the air and began screaming after possibly being punched by a fellow rider, witnesses said.

The woman, who has not been identified, entered the busy D train in Manhattan about 6 p.m. Wednesday and began trying to sell crickets and worms to passengers. A teen passenger or passengers than pushed or punched the woman sending her into a frenzy, witnesses said.

The woman then began screaming and tossed the containers of insects in the air, sending the rest of the car into a panic.

Other passengers pushed to the opposite end of the car and one pulled the brake, stopping the car between stations on Manhattan Bridge for at least 30 minutes. The air conditioning also shut off.

"It was pandemonium," said Chris Calabrese, 29, who was on board with his girlfriend. "It was the craziest thing I've ever seen on a train."

Several passengers tried to restrain the woman who continued to scream, then began urinating on herself and attempting to vomit on them, the New York Post reported.

"Crickets everywhere and 100 people were trying to run," passenger John Ray wrote on Facebook. "To where? People crammed into one end of the train. The air conditioning shut off. She was freaking out because she couldn't breathe because she was in such a state and there was no air."

The train eventually got rolling again and arrived at DeKalb Avenue station. Police were waiting on the platform and took the woman into custody, Calabrese said.
