GREEN BAY, Wis., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Police in Wisconsin said they've received a few calls about the creepy clown seen wandering the city of Green Bay in viral Facebook photos.

A Facebook page dubbing the mystery jokester "Gags - The Green Bay Clown" was set up to collect photos of the horror-style clown after he was first spotted wandering around the intersection of Mason and Adams Street about 2 a.m. Monday.

Police said they have received calls about clown sightings this week, but they have few options to deal with the apparent prankster unless he commits a crime.

"A person can walk down the sidewalk dressed however they want as long as they're in a place they legally can be, and they're not in a place that has a closing time, like a park," Green bay Police Capt. Kevin Warych told WGBA-TV.

One Facebook user alleged the clown sightings were masterminded by a local director working on a short horror film.

Mysterious creepy clown sightings are nothing new -- the trend reached a peak in the run-up to Halloween 2014, when people dressed in horror clown costumes were spotted lurking around several U.S. cities.
