'The Cat in the Hat' announces presidential run at Dr. Seuss' childhood home

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 27 (UPI) -- The Cat in the Hat made a public appearance in front of Dr. Seuss' childhood home in Massachusetts to announce his candidacy for president.

The Cat appeared Tuesday morning outside the Springfield home where the children's author -- born Theodor Geisel -- grew up alongside his "running mates," Thing 1 and Thing 2; his "campaign manager," Dr. Seuss Enterprises President Susan Brandt; Sen. James Welch, D-West Springfield; and Springfield City Council President Michael Fenton.

Brandt, speaking on the Cat's behalf, responded to a question about the fictional character releasing his tax returns by saying the anthropomorphic feline "will be fully transparent."

Brandt said the Cat is running as an independent and will be seeking cabinet members who can speak in rhyme.

The campaign's official website, catinhatforprez.com, allows children to vote on the Cat's platform.

Potential themes for the campaign include education, ocean conservation, preserving the environment, fighting hunger and kindness.

Welsh offered the cat his enthusiastic endorsement.

"This is an opportunity for us to recognize the wonder and the pride we have in Springfield for being the home of Dr. Seuss," Welch said.
