California distillery releases vodka made from San Francisco fog

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 24 (UPI) -- A California-based distillery has found a way to give drinkers a taste of San Francisco by creating a vodka made from the city's fog.

The vodka, known as Fog Point, was released by Alameda-based Hangar 1 Vodka, who used fog catchers to turn San Francisco's fog into fresh water.

Fog catchers were set up in several locations throughout the San Francisco area including Sutro Tower, Berkeley Hills, Outer Sunset and El Sobrante.

"This water is then blended with vodka distilled from premium wine sourced from a sustainable vineyard on the Central Coast," the company's website states.

Hangar One's head distiller Caley Shoemaker told KPIX that the idea for the limited edition vodka came from the company's desire to help improve circumstances surrounding California's drought.

"Sixty percent of vodka is water," Shoemaker said. "We started thinking 'what's a way that we can make something that's fun and creative and different but that is gonna have a positive impact on this drought in California.'"

Only 2,500 bottles of Fog Point were produced with each bottle selling for $125. According to Hangar 1, all proceeds will go to water conservancy in California.
