SAN DIEGO, March 17 (UPI) -- A dog, presumed dead after falling from a fishing boat off the California coast, was found alive by Navy service members on an island 80 miles off San Diego.

Nick Haworth, who mourned his dog, Luna, with a Feb. 20 Facebook post, said the dog fell overboard from his commercial fishing boat, and that he led search teams in a sweep of the area for several days after.

The 1-year-old dog was presumed dead until Navy service members on San Clemente Island, about 80 miles off San Diego, discovered Luna wandering the island.

Luna was malnourished but otherwise in good health.

She was taken in by a friend of Haworth until he returned from a trip Thursday.

"Beyond stoked to have Luna back. I [always] knew she was a warrior," Haworth wrote on Facebook.
