'Bad-tempered' 10-foot alligator attempts to cross Florida highway

WESTON, Fla., March 10 (UPI) -- A 10-foot long alligator was spotted attempting to cross a Florida highway near Sawgrass Recreation Park.

Facebook user Jim Leljedal shared video of Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers attempting to safely guide the large gator off the road.

"A bad-tempered 10-foot alligator was trying to cross US Highway 27 as I drove home from Sawgrass Recreation Park near Weston," he wrote. "The Fish & Wildlife officers had their hands full trying to persuade the big fella to change course. The other bystanders stayed a hundred feet away!"

Officers can be seen prodding the gator with a pole and were eventually able to guide it off the highway and into the nearby sawgrass.

The gator hissed and snapped at Wildlife Commission officers as Leljedal speculated it may have been engaged in a conflict before being found on the road.

"It looked as if [the gator] had been in a fight," he told the Sun Sentinel. "He had a little bit of damage to his big jaws so my guess is he might have had a run-in with an even bigger alligator and might have been trying to get away from there."
