RENTON, Wash., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A Washington state company is turning potatoes into profits by writing messages on the tubers and mailing them out anonymously.

Mystery Potato, based in Renton, allows customers to have personalized messages scrawled on potatoes and mailed anonymously to their specified recipients.

The prices for the potato-grams start at $7.99.

"We actually have about 10 contractors here in the United States," Jeff Kelly of Mystery Potato told KOMO-TV. "We have 10 contractors internationally who create potatoes for us and ship them all over the world."

Kelly said the company saw a Valentine's spike in potato orders, thanks in part to a Buzzfeed profile of the company.

"We send a lot of potatoes that say 'you're a hot potato,'" Kelly said.

Kelly said the most popular potato message strikes him as unusual.

"'Nerd' in the biggest letters possible," Kelly said. "Seems to be a popular message for some reason."
