Reno elects dog as mayor for a day

RENO, Nev., Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A shake-up occurred in Reno's government on Monday as the city named a rescue dog its mayor for the day.

Everett, a Newfoundland/Lab mix who was adopted from SPCA of Northern Nevada was sworn in as mayor of Reno on Feb. 11 and served as mayor of the Nevada city throughout the day.

"We would like to thank our Mayor Hillary Schieve for making this opportunity possible and for supporting us in bringing awareness to homeless animals in the Northern Nevada community," SPCA of Norther Nevada wrote on Facebook.

Visitors were invited to witness the start of Everett's service as Mayor Schieve proclaimed him mayor for the day.

The rest of his day included traveling in a limousine to various landmarks around Reno for various photo-shoots to raise awareness for homeless animals in the area.

At the end of his run as mayor Everett received a retirement package of a deluxe dog bed, food bowl, gift basket and a 60 pound bag of dog food.
