ST. CLOUD, Fla., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Residents of a Florida county said they are being catfished -- that is, apparent pranksters are placing catfish in their mailboxes.

Maddison Fertic of St. Cloud said her mail carrier alerted her Monday morning to an unusual item in her mailbox: a large, dead catfish.

"I was honestly in shock because it doesn't make any sense," Fertic told WKMG-TV. "It's just one of those things where it's, just, 'Why?'"

Fertic said the catfish was 12 inches long and appears to have been alive when it was placed in the mailbox.

"It looked like it could have been a live fish that somebody stuck in there and then it flopped around like fish do because the whole mailbox is dirty," she said.

Fertic said she is unsure of why she was targeted and hopes the incident was just a random prank.

"It's just a fish in my mailbox now, but is something going to happen in the future where someone throws a brick through my window? It just makes you wonder," she told WOFL-TV.

At least one other Osceola County resident reported a similar find in their mailbox this week and a third resident said a catfish was left in their yard.

Fertic said she plans to file a police report.

To the person who put a catfish in my mailbox great move.
