HAYWARD, Calif., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Police in California were met with a surprise after receiving a call about a seal stranded on land on Wednesday morning.
Hayward police posted a photo of the seal pup, which they discovered in bushes near a local business, dehydrated, malnourished and struggling to move.
"We were thinking it was probably a possum or weird cat but the caller insisted it was a seal," they wrote. "Well lo and behold it was a seal!"
Police contacted the Marine Mammal Center California, who were able to identify the pup as a former rescue named "Pipester".
Pipester was treated for malnourishment at the center in November before being released back into the wild.
"It looks like he had a hard time finding food and then lost his way," Marin Mammal Center spokesperson Laura Sherr told KTVU.
The center confirmed that he the seal pup would remain at the center until it was strong enough to be rereleased into the wild.
