KYBURZ, Calif., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The California Department of Transportation took the direct approach to dealing with a fallen boulder blocking a roadway -- they blew it up with dynamite.

Caltrans posted a video to YouTube showing the boulder blocking the westbound lane of Highway 50 in Kyburz Jan. 13 after rolling onto the roadway.

The 20-ton boulder was determined to be too large and too heavy to move with a loader, so the Caltrans crew set about trying to make it smaller.

The team drilled holes in the boulder and ended up using about 3 pounds of dynamite to detonate the rock, which was then carried out of the roadway.
