"When Tommy said it was his dad's dog and he was older and struggling with Parkinson's, I was like we have to get him home," Lewis told Fox 7 Austin.
Eventually a woman named Kelly Warr volunteered to make the 13-hour drive to deliver the dog, who picked up the nickname "Travelin' Ace" back to his owners.
"This would mean the world to this man if he got his dog back, and he didn't have to ask. we're bringing him back...Ace is coming home," she told WLTX.
After traveling through several states and taking numerous photos along the way, Ace was finally reunited with the Filla family. Tommy posted a video of the dog's reunion with his father and went on to express his gratitude.
"Dad is very appreciative for all that has been done for Ace," he wrote in a Facebook post. "I don't think he has grasped the way social media works today. He wants to extend his gratitude to everyone involved. Thanks from all of us."
