SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A blind, elderly dog that survived months at the bottom of a Bosnian well was rescued, placed in a foster home and given a new name: Christmas.

The Massachusetts-based Harmony Fund said in a Facebook post the dog survived months at the bottom of the nearly-30-foot-deep well thanks to scraps thrown to the canine by local children.

The canine's plight came to the attention of animal rescuer Fahrudin Caki Bravo and his friend Ratko Koblar, who drove for hours to rescue the dog from the well.

"The dog had been there for months and they don't know if he was thrown in, or if he fell in," Harmony Fund founder Laura Simpson told ABC News. "We're certainly hoping that he fell, but with the dog being completely blind, he was only kept alive because the local children were kind enough to feed him."

The Harmony Fund posted video of the rescue on Facebook.

"He [Bravo] and his friend thought it was perfectly feasible getting the dog out and they did a great job," Simpson said. "They made it look easy."

The dog, now named Christmas, was checked out by a veterinarian and placed in a foster home.

"Surprisingly, the dog is in fairly good, physical condition," Simpson said. "The blindness of course is from a pre-existing condition, but he's now in foster care and we're hoping he can find a home there he's loved and respected in the way he should be."

"I think there's another video clip he [Bravo] had sent me where he's rubbing Christmas' belly and he was in heaven," Simpson said. "Christmas is a very gentle dog with a very sweet, and forgiving disposition."
