John Freund posted a video to YouTube showing the rodent and bird fighting across a cobblestone walkway in the Williamsburg neighborhood.
The rat came out the clear victor in the confrontation.
"You only see this in New York," a man's voice can be heard saying in the video.
Another bystander posits the city has "genetically mutated rats."
The video ends with the rat dragging its vanquished prey off to apparently become a meal.
