WestJet passenger finds mystery clothing, beer in her luggage

EDMONTON, Alberta, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Airline WestJet apologized for some "off the mark" humor in response to a customer who discovered men's clothing and five cans of beer in her luggage.

Nicole Squires of Edmonton said she was baffled after a recent flight to Kelowna when she discovered her bag had somehow picked up some dirty men's clothing, a shoe, a pair of slippers and five cans of Coors Light.

"When I opened it a beer fell out. I was like 'Oh no, I have someone else's luggage.' Then I started going through it and I'm picking up men's clothes," she told CBC News. "Not just a random shirt or jeans -- a full outfit."

Squires said she called WestJet, but was offered little the way of an explanation.

"They were like 'Oh gross, no way,'" she said. "They were so cavalier about it. They didn't really care."

The passenger said she decided to tweet a photo of the mysterious stowaway items and tagged the airline.

"WTF @WestJet. Opened my luggage and found a mans outfit with 5 coors after it was checked through security #how" she tweeted.

Squires said she was shocked by the airline's response: "What happens in Vegas..."

"I didn't know whether to laugh or be angry about their response. It was pretty inappropriate for sure," she told CTV News. "I was pretty shocked."

Squires' second tweet, which sarcastically thanked the airline for its "appropriate" response, received a reply asking her to again call the airline.

Squires said she spoke directly with an "apologetic" customer service representative on WestJet's baggage line and the rep pledged to investigate the incident.

"The baggage staff noticed that a bag was open and right next to the bag was some clothing and some cans of beer," WestJet spokesman Robert Palmer said. "The bag staff decided to put the items in the bag next to it that was open."

Palmer apologized for the airline's "off the mark" Twitter humor.

Squires said she will not avoid WestJet in the future, but she will always make sure to lock her luggage.
