FORT MILL, S.C., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A South Carolina high school shocked some parents with a quote on Homecoming dance flyers addressing the issue of dress tightness for female attendees.

The flyers promoting the upcoming Homecoming dance at Nation Ford High School included a quote from fashion designer Edith Head: "Your dresses should be tight enough to show you're a woman and loose enough to show you're a lady."

The quote was placed with dress code instructions that also stated: "PLEASE leave something to the imagination!"

"Edith Head was a famous fashion designer. The students and parents thought that was a way to get that message across and for it to be tasteful," Principal Jason Johns told WCNC-TV.

However, some parents said they did not consider the message to be "tasteful" at all.

"Inappropriate, sexual message -- on something distributed from the school. I was horrified. It targets the girls in the school nothing about boys," parent Sarah Heins said. "I thought, would something ever come home saying 'boys your pants should be tight enough to show you're a man?' Everyone thought it was funny and an okay message to our girls."

Johns said he has received some complaints from parents.

"There was some perception that it was targeted specifically towards our females and maybe it was seen to hurt folks' feelings, but that was not the intent at all," Johns told WBTV.

"To the folks offended by it, it wasn't harmless -- if you take any quote out of context you can scrutinize it," Johns said.

He said the quote was whited out from flyers hanging in the school and was removed from an online posting about the dance.

"You don't want to offend somebody, if you can avoid it," Johns said.
