LOWER TOWNSHIP, N.J., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Authorities in New Jersey said a bomb squad responded when a resident discovered a live explosive cannonball buried in their yard.

The Lower Township Police Department said a resident of the Villas neighborhood called authorities Saturday to report finding what appeared to be an explosive cannonball while digging in his yard.

Police responded and confirmed the 5-inch-circumference object, which bore a brass cap and a stamp reading, "4k, 85mm," appeared to be an explosive device.

The Atlantic City Police Bomb Squad reported and took an X-ray that confirmed the object was actively explosive.

The ball was transported for detonation away from populated areas.

The vintage and origins of the cannonball were unclear.

Lower Township police said the cannonball was an unusual find, but artillery shells are not uncommon in the area.
