EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A search for "El Paso's Fastest Wiener" during a minor-league baseball game in Texas turned into a lengthy delay when a runaway dachshund decided to tour the field.

The El Paso Chihuahuas, a Triple-A team affiliated with the San Diego Padres, held an "El Paso's Fastest Wiener" dachshund race during Saturday's game, but the canine-themed portion of the evening's entertainment went on longer than expected when one of the competing dogs gave his owner the slip.

The team's video, which set the dachshund's mad dash to Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream," shows the wiener dog evade attempted dog catchers, including the baseball team, while rounding first and second bases.

The dog made visits to the pitcher's mound and foul ball territory before rolling onto his back and allowing himself to be captured near second base.

"The El Paso Chihuahuas hosted the Wiener Schnitzel weenie dog race. What could go wrong?" the team said in posting the video to YouTube.
