BUFFALO, N.Y., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Residents and visitors to Buffalo, N.Y., are celebrating the first "birthday" of an unusual attraction -- a shark-headed statue dubbed "Shark Girl."

Shark Girl, created by Casey Riordan Millard and installed in the Canalside park by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, celebrated her first birthday Wednesday with fans on social media posting Shark Girl selfies with the hashtag "#SharkGirlBuffaloBDay."

The sculpture, which depicts a human girl with the head of a great white shark, is popular among Buffalo residents and visitors with her own profiles on Instagram and Twitter.

Shark Girl's unveiling last year was described by some as a surreal event worthy of a David Lynch film.

"I welcome Shark Girl to the banks of the Niagara River!" Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said at the ceremony, welcoming visitors to "sit next to her and look out, with her, at the gorgeous view that is the new downtown Buffalo and the wonderful future in front of us all."
