NEW YORK, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Authorities said they arrested three men Wednesday after they spent hours under the streets of New York City -- in a sewer -- mounting a "treasure hunt" for lost valuables.

According to the New York City Police Department, the men were caught red-handed beneath the streets in Flatbush -- carrying metal detectors intended to search for potentially precious items amid a world of waste.

Police said the men had spent four long hours in that environment, located near East 35th Street near Avenue H, CBS New York reported.

"God knows what they were looking for, and damn sure I wouldn't be crawling through the sewers of New York," NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said.

Arrested were Marquis Evans, 21, Damien Nieves, 35, and David Hannibal, 45. Each faces trespassing and reckless endangerment charges.

The men gained access to the sewer because Evans is a Department of Environmental Protection employee, officials said.

Perhaps adding insult to injury, the men came up empty-handed in their underground excursion, CBS New York's report said.
