BRUINISSE, Netherlands, July 23 (UPI) -- Police in the Netherlands said a man who failed to jump his car over an open draw bridge initially escaped injury, but was hurt trying to get out of the water.

Video of the Tuesday incident in Bruinisse shows the silver station wagon drive over the edge of the city's retractable bridge when it was nearly closed and fall to the water below after bouncing off the approaching edge.

Police said the bridge was still open by about 13 feet when the incident occurred.

The 56-year-old driver was initially uninjured and escaped his car without incident, but he suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung when he fell while attempting to climb from the water to a concrete ledge, police said.

It was unclear Thursday whether the failed stunt was an intentional attempt to jump the bridge gap. Police said the incident is under investigation.
